About SPEC

My photo
Society Promoting Environmental Conservation
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
SPEC was founded in 1969 and is the oldest non-profit charitable organization that addresses environmental issues in British Columbia. We do advocacy, education and research with a focus on offering practical solutions for urban sustainability challenges. One of our current campaigns is to promote urban agriculture and local food production. Our crew consists of a variety of dedicated volunteers who have a keen interest in food, gardening, biodiversity, sustainable systems and more. In the process of developing our two demonstration sites we are learning what will and will not work under two different types of growing conditions - a rooftop and a garden plot. Our goal is to share what we have learned about urban agriculture as a way to helping or inspiring others to join in the task of local and household food production.

Cambie Square Communal Garden

The Cambie Square Communal Garden runs parallel to Cambie (west side) between 10th and 12th (north of City Square). Work parties are every Sunday 10-12 once the season warms up. Email cambiesqvol@gmail.com and ask to be added to our volunteer list to receive updates and notices.

This garden has no individual plots but all volunteers share in the planning, harvesting and maintenance of the garden.

If you are interested in this model of gardening, we look forward to hearing from you!
